The Big T is named after the Mighty Tongariro River on the Central Plateau of the North Island of New Zealand, where it has proven to be very effective in low clear conditions. The first person to hook a fish on this fly was legendary intrepid angler Gretchen from Colorado. We have now been fishing together for two weeks every year for over 15 years. After being hooked, the fish promptly swam around a log. Gretchen looked at me and said "This is a Code Red Situation" and there the fly was named. For years I have been trailing small Ant dry flies behind a larger dry to sipping fish. This pattern started life as a foam dry ant. At times the ant did not float too well and I was amazed at how often fish would eat it after it had sunk. So he we have the sinking version the Crucial Ant. This is its black tungsten bead variation. On its first outing I was guiding a young Australian named Brett Haig. The fishing happened to be sensational and he asked me the name of the fly and at that time it was yet to be named. He said "let's call it a hoover, as it sucks up every fish in the stream." A C3 twist on one of the greatest nymphs ever designed. The Pheasant Tail Nymph started its days on the river Avon in the UK and was designed by Frank Sawyer who at the time was employed as a river keeper.
Over the years there have been many variations and here are ours.
The Northside version has a bright thorax and the Southside a dull one!
